HIPPODROME

Hippodromme (Hipodrom)

The Hippodrome is a great example of the achievements of the Byzantine period. It is a circus that was used as a social center in the former Constantinople (the capital of the Byzantine Empire) where some of the best sport events such as horse racing took place.

The Hippodrome was constructed during the 4th and today it is usually connected with the heyday of the Byzantine Empire. In the past it was a popular place for relax and entertainment as people were allowed to watch and take part in various events.

Today the Hippodrome is known as the Sultanahmet Square but going there visitors can still see some fragments of its original outlook and atmosphere.
